Kingdom of Heaven

“Your soul is in your keeping alone, when you stand before God, you cannot say that I was told by others to do thus, or that virtue wasn’t convenient at the time, this will not suffice.”
This is a dialogue from movie Kingdom of Heaven, just watched it yesterday. Amazing movie, it is about Ballion ,a Knight, who saves Jerusalem from attack of Muslims.
Jerusalem is called Kingdom of Heaven which is the setting for fierce war between Christians and Muslims.
The movie made me think about the “heaven", its past, present and future, and how this land has being place for constant bloodshed and politics.
What is so special about this piece of land which makes men fight battles and kill each other. Sure it is a holy place for three religions, thereby place of dispute, but would the Gods of the respective religion would approve of the bloodshed which is going on in their name.
In one of my previous posts I said that religion serves as a sink where people could pour their anxieties and complains and derive strength from it. What I missed was religion also give men faith and belief.
Faith is a strong thing to possess it can make men stronger and in extreme cases foolish and wild.
It was the faith that made part of Jerusalem’s army believe that God’s army could not be defeated ,and that made them ride out to certain death.
Close to home it was faith that made people do what they did in Ayodhya . It is faith that makes lacs of pilgrims to take dangerous roads to visit temples and other places of worship. They have the faith that God will take care of them if they do the required rituals.
How can anybody rationally justify these acts??

There is no answer for that; it is now part of our life.
People since early ages are easily motivated in the name of religion, politicians and war mongers have time and again exploited this weakness and misled them , resulting in great tragedies . Can there be any end to this??

Houte Route - Summary Post

It's a pretty popular walk from Chamonix (France) to Zermatt (Switzerland). In winters, it becomes a cross country ski route, but in summer, it transforms to a hiking route, which traverses through pretty high elevation, hence its called Houte Route (High Route). Unlike backpacking in the US, this backpacking was supposed to be much easier, as we were basically staying in hotels/dorms, and we didn't have to carry tents, sleeping bags, and food.    But, we were surprised how hard some of the hiking days were.  We were a group of 6 friends.  My wife (Mona) and I were the most "untrained hikers"; others in our group were more committed and better prepared than us. We expected to walk through Swiss meadows, mountain villages, hi-fi ing cows along the ways. Even though some days were exactly like that, around 1/3 of the trails were very tough and tested us physically and mentally.  Here is a very brief summary of our daily adventures on the trail. Day 1 : Chamonix ...

Walk in a Temperate Rain Forest

We marched along exhausted, wet, and worried, on a lonely trail in a densely wooded rainforest. It was getting dark; we were hungry. We have been walking in the rain for more than 3 hours and we expected to arrive at our campsite any second for the last 40 mins. My socks were wet, my backpack was weighing heavy on my shoulders, and I was ready to just crash on the trail.  Why torture ourselves by backpacking miles in unpredictable weather and challenging landscapes, rational people often ask hikers and backpackers. There is not one definite answer; there are so many reasons, and everyone has different personal ones. For me, I derive energy from the natural world whenever I am in a forest. Additionally, I truly experience living in the moment, all that matters is the next milestone, which path to take, how much water is left, do we have enough food and where is that damn campsite.  Out of mist of rain and dwindling dusk light, the sign board of Lewis Meadows campsite greeted ...
